San Francisco/Sausalito, CA January 26 2004--RhodyCo Productions of San Francisco proudly announces that its 12K race across the Golden Gate Bridge enters its 21st year with a new title sponsor, Emerald of California. ‘Emerald Nuts Across the Bay 12K’, Sunday, March 21st 2004, will continue to build on the runner loyalty it achieved as the ‘Houlihan’s to Houlihan’s 12K’. Emerald, the new snack nut division of Diamond of California, brings a fresh look and vast array of healthy snack nuts to what Runner’s World magazine recently called ‘the best bridge run in America.’
More than 5,000 runners, many of them veterans of the scenic, challenging route from Sausalito to San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge, are expected to participate. The starting line at East Fort Baker looks across the Bay at a magnificent view of the city. As the run progresses across the bridge, through the Presidio Forest, along Crissy Field and Marina Green and into Aquatic Park on Fisherman’s Wharf, the original panorama continues to shift and focus on one inspiring version of that view after another. Announcing the new long-term title sponsor, Dave Rhody, founder of the race now known as ‘Emerald Nuts Across the Bay 12K’ explains, “What could be better? A beautiful run into San Francisco just a few days after St. Patrick’s Day sponsored by a new line of healthy, wholesome snack nuts in emerald green canisters from Emerald of California.” Runners will receive samples of Emerald snack nuts in their finisher goodie bags.
Diamond of California, the world leader in culinary and inshell nuts, announced the creation of Emerald of California earlier this month. Fourteen new products under the Emerald label are now hitting the shelves of approximately 1,100 Northern California supermarkets and drugstores. "Our goal is to make Emerald the brand consumers think of when they consider all snack options," said Michael J. Mendes, Diamond President/CEO. "Research shows that other snack nut brands have not kept pace with constantly evolving consumer expectations and therefore have not created enough choice and excitement to make nuts a first-tier snack selection. Emerald is about to change all that."
While the majority of the ‘Emerald Nuts Across the Bay 12K’ runners will enjoy testing their personal fitness on the 7.51 mile course, hundreds of the Bay Area’s best runners will challenge each other start to finish for $5,000 in prize money. ‘Emerald Nuts Across The Bay 12K’ is the West Coast 12K Championship, part of the USA Track & Field Grand Prix series of roadrace championships. The 12K course across the Golden Gate is home to 15 national and world 12K bests. The men’s course record (35:48) was set by Bill Donakowski in 1987; the women’s course record (40:27) was set by U.S. Olympian Linda Somers-Smith in 1995 while she was tuning up for the Seoul Games.
The ‘world class’ post-race party is such a highlight to the run it has its own name, "A Celebration of Running." And, it's perhaps the kids from the Edgewood Center for Children and Families, the long-term beneficiary of ‘Emerald Nuts Across The Bay 12K’, who celebrate the most at the finish line. These kids train as runners to help them set and achieve goals and to raise their self-esteem. The Edgewood Center for Children & Families provides focused care for emotionally disturbed children (aged 5-12) and their families, and serves the entire Bay Area. Edgewood uses the money raised by the run for their running program which is the central piece of the children's recreational therapy programs.
